20 july 2011

this summer has been one wrought with changes and interesting sleeping arrangements for loho -- often resulting in bouts of insomnia. thanks to a sweet best friend who bought me a bottle of melatonin and some other sleepless night goodies (pictured right), i'm mostly over it. (fingers crossed)

A on the other hand just plain fights sleep. here's a typical morning: wake up smilin', chit chat a little ("good morning! what do you want to do today? wanna ride bikes? play with legos? oh, eat and poop... okay, we can do that."), change diaper numero uno, put on a onesie (the key here is not to get too attached to whatever outfit is chosen because it will NOT last all day), move to the living room, drink a bottle, burp once or twice, maybe spit up a little on that onesie that we've maintained emotional distance from, change, move back to the living room, stare deeply into each other's eyes and.... wait for it.... YAWN, boom. thus begins the "oh crap i'm getting sleepy" freak out sequence.

1. scrunch up face and initiate obvious if hesitant grunting
2. if loho is able to reposition A swiftly enough, a brief interlude of contentment.
3. resume grunting and add a few head jerks of discontent
4. longer grunts give way to what a novice may deem crying, but nay.... these are fake.
5. occasionally A will even muster a few tears (hold your ground)
6. we are now sufficiently agitated to commence flailing and wailing. this, my friends, is real. and it is not fun.

if you reach step 6 in the sequence, there's only one thing to do. swaddle the mess out of him, shove a pacifier in his mouth, say a prayer and lay him down in the crib.... and walk away. ouch. walk away from that sweet little baby that you tell all your secrets and worries because his lack of language renders him trustworthy? walk away from those big, still-baby-blue eyes and that toothless grin? ayup. this screaming bundle is not the Anson we know and love. he is sleepy and he is pissed about it.

good news is: he eventually wears himself out.

we listen to these songs to help us calm down.
